"What's this going to cost me?" is the first thing every homeowner asks when the garage door stops working. Fair question. But if a company gives you one exact number over the phone without ever seeing your door, be careful, because honest garage door pricing doesn't work that way. Two broken springs on two different doors can be very different jobs, and a serious company prices the job in front of them.
So rather than publish made-up numbers, here's something more useful: what actually determines the price, how a trustworthy company quotes, and the warning signs that you're about to be overcharged.
How Honest Pricing Works

You approve a firm written price before any work begins, and that's the number on the invoice at the end. Most repairs take under two hours, and there are no "while we're here" add-ons.
What Moves the Price Up or Down
1. Door size and weight
A double-car door needs bigger springs, heavier cables and more labour than a single. Oversized and solid-wood doors sit at the top of the scale.
2. Spring cycle rating
Standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 cycles. High-cycle springs (25,000 and up) cost more upfront but last about two and a half times longer, which usually makes them the better buy for a busy household.
3. Parts availability
Common GTA door sizes are stocked on our vans, so most repairs finish in one visit. A rare spring size or a discontinued panel may have to be ordered, which mostly adds days rather than dollars.
4. Collateral damage
This is the big one. A broken spring that someone kept "testing" with the opener often turns into a broken spring plus stripped opener gears plus a bent top panel. When something snaps or the door jams, stop, disconnect the opener, and call. Doing nothing costs nothing.
5. Emergency timing
Middle-of-the-night lockouts cost more with most companies. Since we run 7 days a week with same-day dispatch, most "emergencies" end up handled during normal hours at normal prices anyway.
Repair or Replace the Whole Door?
Our rule of thumb: if the door is over 20 years old, uninsulated, and the repair quote is heading toward a third of what a comparable new insulated door would cost, ask for both numbers on the same visit. A new door improves the look of the whole house and cuts heat loss, and you stop paying again and again to keep an old door alive.
Red Flags When Comparing Quotes
- No price until "we take a look", plus a charge for looking. Estimates should be free.
- Too-good-to-be-true teaser specials. The classic bait is a rock-bottom "spring special" advertised online that triples with mandatory add-ons once the truck is in your driveway.

- Pressure to replace everything. A good tech shows you the worn part and explains your options. Sometimes the answer really is a single inexpensive cable.
